Affording Healthy Foods

Before You Head to the Store
Take 10 minutes to think about your meals for the entire week. Everyone in the family can eat the same foods for each meal. They just need to adjust the amount, so that they eat the right amounts from each food group for their body.

  • Make a list of all the foods and ingredients you'll need to prepare the meals. Know what you want to buy before you get to the store. A list will stop you from buying things you don't need.
  • Organize your shopping list by grouping items that are found in the same area of the store (list all produce items together, all dairy items, etc.) Try this shopping list
  • Complete an inventory of the foods and ingredients that you already have on hand. Cross off items that you already have at home.
  • Review your coupons and the weekly ad to see if any of the foods or ingredients that you need are on sale.

At the Store

  • Don't shop when you're hungry. You're more likely to buy foods that you don't need and that are less healthy. Eat a piece of fruit or another healthy snack before you go.
  • Check the weekly ad for sales. Consider the frozen aisle for fruits and vegetables that may be out of season.
  • Look for any of our H-E-B brands. You will often find that our brands are a more affordable option for most items. Whether they're on sale or not!
  • Read food labels. Look at food labels to make healthy choices. Look for foods with these words:
  • Non-fat, low-fat or skim
  • high-fiber or good source of fiber
  • low-salt or low-sodium
  • Shop the perimeter first. You'll see that all of the fresh, whole foods are usually along the outside aisles: breads, fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, poultry, fish and dairy products are found by shopping against the walls of the store. The more processed foods are typically located in the center aisles. There are still many healthy choices in this area of the store, but it's important that you know how to read a label and that you know what to look for.
