planning a cinco de mayo party

Margarita

The trick to having a really great party is to plan ahead. That way you can do most of the work in advance and have plenty of time when your guests arrive to enjoy your own celebration.

Invitations
Let your guests know you're having a Cinco de Mayo party with colorful invitations. Use preprinted invitations or colored paper and pens, confetti-decorated backgrounds, festive stickers, or travel brochure illustrations. Or send out e-invitations for quick results.

Decorations
Decorate your celebration with serapes and bright shawls, colorful dishes or paper plates, and serving dishes and trays made from Mexican pottery. As a centerpiece, try splashy crepe paper flowers in a glass or earthen vase or pile cascarones (confetti eggs) in a shiny copper bowl. Top it all off with a display of the red, green, and white flag of Mexico. Olé!

Music
Background music is essential. Tune to salsa and tejano music on popular radio stations. Guitar and mariachi tunes also liven up the occasion.

Food
Decide if you want catered party trays, finger foods, a full meal, food you prepare, potluck, or a combination of any. Then visit your local H-E-B to find a delicious selection of precooked meats, imported and domestic foods, deli options, and other fresh alternatives.
