ways to customize

Icing
For basic white icing to cover two dozen cookies, stir together the following ingredients:
  • 1 c. confectioners' sugar
  • 4 Tbsp. milk
  • 2 tsp. light corn syrup
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla or almond extract

Cinnamon
A sprinkle of cinnamon goes a long way on plain white icing. For a special kick, sprinkle cinnamon on chocolate cookies right out of the oven. For a dozen cookies, one tablespoon is enough to cover them well. You can also mix in a little sugar to create a cheery cinnamon and sugar taste.

Crushed Peppermint Candies
Peppermint candy is a refreshing flavor on any sugar or chocolate cookie and adds a festive sparkle on white, red or chocolate frosting. Roughly ten finely-crushed peppermint candies can cover a dozen cookies.

Coconut and Powdered Drink Mix
Choose a packet (.13 oz.) of unsweetened powdered drink mix (such as Kool-Aid) in a tangy flavor such as cherry or strawberry. To cover a dozen cookies, add 1/4 packet of the drink powder (or 1/2 for extra tartness) to 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut and mix very well. Sprinkle the mixture onto icing before the icing sets for an appealing sweet and tart flavor combination.

Christmas Tree Ornaments
Get the kids involved with this fun cookie topping idea. Use a cookie cutter to create Christmas tree shapes from your dough. Bake and top your cookies with white icing for snow covered trees or add green food coloring for festive pine trees. Before the icing surface is cool, let your kids add M&M Minis for tree ornaments. Half of a 12 oz. bag of M&M's Minis covers two dozen cookies.

Sugar and Ground Cloves
Mix together 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, add 1/2 tsp. of ground cloves for a sweet and savory blend. Sprinkle on top of the icing before it is set. This sugar and spice mixture covers two dozen cookies.

Thinly-sliced almonds
For a crunchy, flavorful addition to plain sugar cookies, add thinly-sliced almonds on top of basic white icing. For a dozen cookies, 1/4 to 1/2 cups will be enough.

Snow
This topping is ideal for pre-made shortbread cookies. Mix together 1/4 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut to top a dozen cookies.
