Read 3 Read-In Registration

Since 1905, H-E-B has been committed to supporting and improving communities in which we operate. Today, we remain focused on nourishing the future of Texas through our education efforts and we are committed to empowering Texans to thrive.

Did you know that:

  • Texas has one of the country's highest rates of children under the age of five not read to regularly – an unacceptable 26% of kids!

  • Since 80% of a person's vocabulary is developed by age five, young children who are not read to regularly are not exposed to as many words as other children and start school behind their peers.

  • The single most significant factor influencing a child's early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school. (National Commission on Reading, 1985)

That's why H-E-B launched our statewide early childhood literacy program called Read 3 in 2011. This program focuses on educating parents and caregivers about the need to read to their children a minimum of three times per week. H-E-B's goal is to empower Texas families with the tools and resources they need to prepare early learners ensuring that all children have the opportunity to start their school experience with an equal opportunity to succeed.

In honor of national literacy month, we are hosting the largest read-in across Texas. Register your school or organization to be a part of this event on October 1, 2021 and read with us from 9:30am to 10:00am.

All eligible schools will be entered in a drawing for a cash prize of $1000 for their school library. There will be 10 winners overall. One registration per school.
