How to Read Chicken Labels

Americans buy more chicken than any other meat. For good reason, chicken is a great source of protein. With so many different kinds, it can be hard to identify what is the difference between organic, local, natural and other labels found on chicken. Here’s a breakdown of the labels you’ll see and what they mean:

Local:

Produced without additional hormones*, additives, or preservatives, H-E-B Local Grade A Fresh Chicken is locally sourced from farms right in here in Texas so you know your meals contain the freshest chicken available.

Natural:

Natural chicken does not contain added growth hormones*, additives, and antibiotics and is minimally processed to retain natural flavors.

Organic:

In order to be labeled with “USDA Organic,” products follow a strict set of rules. USDA Certified Organic signifies the chickens has been responsibly raised without stimulants, hormones or antibiotics. These chickens have been fed organic all-grain diet and have access to the outdoors.

Central Market organic chicken features the "air chilled" label, meaning the meat is brought down to safe temperatures in a refrigerator. Traditional chicken is chilled in an ice bath. Not all brands' organic chicken is air chilled.
