Fruits and vegetables that are labeled as organic are those that are grown and processed without synthetic chemicals such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers. At this time, nutrition experts are unclear whether this growing method changes the nutrition quality of the crops. While some claim that they have a higher nutritional quality than their conventional counterparts, solid evidence for the above is lacking. Some research shows that there are not major differences between conventional and organic crops in regard to nutrient content. While it has been found that some fruits and vegetables still carry traces of pesticides, no negative health effects after washing have been firmly linked to this. Therefore, it can be assumed that the health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables far outweighs the risk of pesticide exposure. Most experts agree that more research needs to be done in this area. |
