Classic Italian Turkey Pasta Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Canola oil
  • 1 Medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 cup Celery stalks, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Carrot, chopped
  • 1 White ground turkey 85% lean
  • 1 cup Petite sirah
  • 1 cup Reduced sodium chicken broth
  • 28 oz Crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp Italian herbs

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat.
  2. Add onions, celery and carrots; cook about 5 minutes or until soft.
  3. Transfer to medium-size slow cooker.
  4. In the same skillet, crumble turkey in a single layer and stir constantly for 7-8 minutes, or until cooked through and a meat thermometer reads 165°F.
  5. Transfer to slow cooker.
  6. Pour wine into skillet; simmer until reduced to 1/2 cup.
  7. Add wine, chicken broth, tomatoes and Italian herbs to slow cooker; season with salt and pepper.
  8. Cover and cook on LOW 6 to 8 hours.
  9. Variation: Substitute 1 package (20 ounces) Honeysuckle White® Sweet or Hot Italian Sausage, casings removed, for ground turkey, and omit Italian herbs.
