Description
Mamey sapote (or simply sapote) is a fruit that’s native to Mexico and Central America. Best enjoyed fresh, it’s a vibrant shade of orange underneath its thick brown skin. When sliced open lengthwise, you might detect a subtle squash-like scent — which isn’t surprising since sapote tastes like a combo of sweet potato, pumpkin and apricot. Scoop out the soft, creamy orange flesh and discard the skin and large seed. Sapote can be enjoyed as-is or added to salads, smoothies and milkshakes. In Mexico, sapote is common in batidos (fruit milkshakes with milk, ice, nutmeg and vanilla). If sapote is unripe, store at room temperature and then tuck into the fridge when it ripens.
