  • Proper CFL Usage: Dimmable CFLs are best suited for fixtures that are left on or 15 or more minutes at a time. They last longest in dry fixtures that allow airflow and are specially designed to work with most dimmable switches. Standard dimmable CFLs are not meant for three-way fixtures or in areas that are exposed to weather, so only use specially labeled CFLs for these applications. For recessed fixtures, covered glass reflector CFLs outperform uncovered twist CFLs by distributing light to task area more evenly. Dimming: Work with most dimmable switches. Do not mix brands of dimmable CFLs on the same dimmer switch. Do not mix incandescent and dimmable CFLs on the same dimmer switch. Do not turn down the dimmer as a method to turn off the light. Turn off the lamp by turning off the switch. Do not leave the lamps on minimum settings for extended periods. Occasionally turn the dimmer up and allow the lamp to run at full brightness.
