Frequently Asked Questions about Digital Photography What is a CCD? How does a camera's MP number affect image quality? How does image resolution relate to print size? What is the drawback of a high-resolution image? How can I create an image with good resolution? What is a CCD? A charge coupled device (CCD) is one of the two main types of image sensors used in digital cameras. When a picture is taken, the CCD is struck by light coming through the camera's lens. Each of the thousands or millions of tiny pixels that make up the CCD converts this light into electrons. The number of electrons, usually described as the pixel's accumulated charge, is measured, and then converted to a digital value. This last step occurs outside the CCD in a camera component called an analog-to-digital converter. return to the top How does a camera's MP number affect image quality? When choosing a digital camera, one of the most important specifications is the size of the image-gathering chip, or the charge coupled device (CCD). This chip is a fine grid of light-sensitive "photosites," or pixels. The term pixel is a combination of the words picture and element and has become widely used in descriptions of digital cameras. It follows that the more pixels your camera has (megapixels, or MPs), the better the image quality, or image resolution, attainable at the highest setting. return to the top How does image resolution relate to print size? The larger print size , the higher the quality will be when the resolution, or number of pixels, increases.
return to the top What is the drawback of a high-resolution image? Higher resolution images take up more space in memory (on your camera's memory card, in your computer, and on the Internet). Higher resolution images will take longer to upload to a server. Also, the average size memory card supplied with cameras is 16 MB. This size card will only hold about 20 to 12 high-resolution images, whereas a 256 MB card will hold about 200 high-resolution images. return to the top How can I create an image with good resolution? If you are shooting an image to be used for an enlargement, always use the highest resolution setting available for your camera, sometimes referred to as the "fine" of "high" setting. Some lower resolution images (less than 1 MB) can still produce an 8 x 12-inch picture with moderate quality. This depends on the presence of adequate lighting (at the time the image was taken), the absence of camera shake (little to no movement of the camera while the image was taken), and the camera lens quality and position. Higher quality lenses (optics) provide a better final image. Minimal use of the camera's zoom also results in better image. Move as close to the subject as possible instead of maximizing the zoom. return to the top |
