SAN ANTONIO, TX – Jan. 10, 2008 –Registration is now underway for the 11th Annual Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure. The Race will be held on Saturday, March 29 from 6 am to noon at the Alamodome in parking lot C. The competitive run starts at 8:15 a.m. H-E-B returns for the sixth year as the Race’s local title sponsor — a commitment made to honor its Partners (employees) and customers — and is making Race entry forms available at all its San Antonio area stores.
In an effort to provide an avenue for more men to show their support for the cause – Men for the Cure has been launched. This initiative provides an option for men that sign-up for the Race to receive a specially branded t-shirt that identifies them as supporting a family member or friend in the fight.
In 2007, the Race attracted more than 27,000 participants, including 1,400 survivors, and for the fourth consecutive year, raised more than $1 million for the continued fight to end breast cancer. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds from the Race funds local breast cancer initiatives, the remaining 25 percent is applied toward national research efforts. During the 2007-2008 grant cycle, the Komen San Antonio Affiliate will contribute $1.2 million for community-based breast health education, screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved in Bexar County. The Komen Race for the Cure series was founded in 1983 and is held annually in more than 114 cities across the United States and internationally.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure began in 1982 as a promise between Nancy G. Brinker and her sister Susan G. Komen who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. As of 2007, Komen has invested nearly $1 billion in breast cancer research and community outreach programs, becoming one of the world’s largest sources of funds fighting breast cancer.
